Bangkok is not only Cowboy street with many bars full of dancing girls, Patpong market in Silom with Ping Pong shows, Nana street with streetwalkers and ladyboys, Sukhumvit road with luxury shops and restaurants, Khao San road with souvenirs shops and lets say ‘local cuisine’ for tourists, Royal palace in Thonburi and other attractions. By my opinion, Bangkok is mainly the city where local people live. You can explore it in local areas far from these attraction.
One of the way you can explore Bangkok is to take a ride or walk along the water canals – Khlong (Thai word for canal). The main canal is in Chao Phraya river, where you can take a scheduled boat use as public transportation. But I do not mean this big river. What I mean are smaller canals which are in Bangkok many.
I have visited the Khlong Prawet Burirom, which is located along the On Nut road. The canal has sidewalk and bridges, so you can take a walk. It took me few hour to walk there and I did not finished it. Along the canal you can see Buddhist Temples, Mosques, local houses and local communities like Thai Muslims.
